to muddy the waters some, there is even newer and more advanced source
control software that SVN: Mercurial

but I have no experience with either SVN or Mercurial, so I can make no
recommendation to move to either (or not). I don't mind CVS.

to muddy the waters even more, there are other options too, Savannah for
one, and Intevation.de's Gforge server for another. (Intevation hosts
freegis.org, and several well known OSS projects)
http://savannah.gnu.org
http://wald.intevation.org
OSGeo may in future (or now?) host some projects.

I can't argue with that. It is easy to move the mailing list though, set
up a new one and subscribe the old list to the new list (mind the
feedback loop), contact Gmane, etc. Then emails to the old address still
get through.
WRT the webspace -- is it possible to move that into CVS (+nightly
sync)? every now and then I get the urge to tweak it (promote the wiki!)
but no access.

better to send it to a opt-in CVS commit mailing list than force all
commits on all devels I think.
