your window manager may have some controls for this.

e.g. I use sawfish: "gnome-window-properties" opens the "sawfish-ui"
opens the Sawfish Configurator. There is a "matched windows" tab which
lets you set/save window placement/size by app name, etc.

In general it's not a wonderful idea for an app to override a WM's
placement decisions by default, but allowing the user to do
--geometry=WxH+X+Y from the command line might be nice.
