Re: [ gpsdrive ] Support for Bluetooth GPS?
I asked this question on the list a while back and I think it may have
been purged from the archive.
I was wondering why the direct serial stuff was on the short list for
removal and below is an extract from that thread.
It appears to me at the moment that the direct serial stuff remains
because it isn't currently causing any problems. I have a serial only
gps and gpsd was a snap to configure. It is set and forget. I know
because I have forgotten how I did it :)

Direct gps-NMEA connection inside gpsdrive might be a fine thing, but:
- in the source it's mangled through different files and is not
really easy to read nor is the code really up to date.
- the NMEA-dialect all the new GPS-receivers speak might be a
little different to what the gpsdrive-NMEA parser understands.
we already had one issue with this the last year.
- the internal NMEA-parse (at least had) some severe buffer overflow
chances
- We would have to update the same code as the GPS people do.
And I think the gpsd people are doing a good job with their project.
And I didn't want to do the work twice. This was also the reason i
removed the really old copy of gpsd which was inside GPSDrive.
I know I myself had some problems compiling gpsd on my boxes( arm
and Debian) (because of the dbus(-1) dependency), but I hope this
will be solved in the near future.
- With a gpsd in between we could easily add another daemon which can
for example read speed info from the Car-Can-Bus and GPSDrive
wouldn't have to know anything different if you have a can-bus
adapter or not. But GPSDrive would get position and speed info
even with no or bad Satellite reception.
- gpsd can also read direct-Garmin and direct-Sirf which are (as what I
know)
more precise than NMEA
- with gpsd more than one application can connect to your gps. This
would for example: kismet, a track logger, a photo application with
position addition, ...
