I wasn't at the list, when this topic came up in the past, iirc.
but your abstract tells exactly what I thought about this topic.
My opinion is, that we should leave the hardware support to the gpsd guys.

Th reason why I asked, is, that I'm currently doing a lot of changes to the 
source, and also trying to remove stuff, which is not needed. not only to 
increase the clarity of the source, but also (hopefully) to get an increase 
in performance.
