most of the window managers I know have this feature of saving window 
positions, and I don't think, the applications have to be aware of that.
It would be interesting, to know how the window managers do this.
Maybe they just add the --geometry option when starting?

sometimes it's a lot of "try and error", but it works; and I'm learning a lot!

I recently added the files gui.c and gui.h to put in the gui-related stuff.
currently it is more or less empty, but this could be the right place for your 
work.
