It's functional. Give it a try, it's free. Maybe you'll like it, maybe
you won't. The old version of gpsdrive (2.09) will run for most a day
without a crash. If it does just restart it.

What exactly do you mean by "unreliable"? As far as the GPS goes, it
will either give you an exact fix or no fix. (Unless you live in a funny
euro place that uses commas for decimal places, but we've fixed that bug
now ;) An expensive survey-grade RTK GPS will get you down to the
millimeter, but your standard consumer ones will all get you to within
10m.
But of course don't head out into the desert with your laptop as your
only means of navigation!
