[ gpsdrive ] No text shown in the "BIG Display"

After I have been away from GPSDrive for some time (my boat is on land
for the winter) I downloaded the latest version from SVN a few days ago.
After a few initial problems I got it all compiling and running. 

However, the big display at the bottom of the window shows no text.

If I open the Preferences and select BigDisplay I get the following
messages in the terminal window where I am running GPSDrive from:

(gpsdrive:27766): Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_font_description_from_string:
assertion `str != NULL' failed

(gpsdrive:27766): Pango-CRITICAL **: pango_font_description_get_family:
assertion `desc != NULL' failed

(gpsdrive:27766): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strlcpy: assertion `dest != NULL'
failed

I have installed some more packages (I am running Ubuntu 6.10) of Pango,
but that did not solve the problem.
